What is Basketball Tap Shots?

The ball hops on its own. You are not choosing how hard to throw it or at what angle, only when to tap. Each tap gives the ball another hop, you get three per shot, and the job is to time them so the third one drops through the hoop.

That constraint is what makes it work on a phone. There is no aiming, no dragging and no power meter, so the whole game runs off one thumb and a sense of rhythm.

The arcs are deliberately slow. An early version had the ball rising and falling inside a third of a second, which meant a whole shot was over in about a second and there was no time to read where it was going. Each hop now takes two thirds of a second to reach its peak, so you can watch the ball and decide, rather than mashing and hoping.

How to play

  1. Tap anywhere on the court, or press space.
  2. Each tap hops the ball up and to the right.
  3. Three hops per shot. Land the last one through the hoop.
  4. Three lives. A missed shot costs one.
  5. The hoop starts still and begins to move once you are scoring.

Scoring

  • A basket is one point. Straightforward.
  • A swish doubles it. Going through without touching the rim or the backboard is worth two.
  • Three in a row doubles it again. A clean shot on a streak is worth four, which is where the scores actually come from.

The multiplier is the whole game once you can reliably hit the thing. Anyone can grind out singles. A run of clean shots is a different discipline, because the safe play is to bank it off the backboard and the backboard costs you the bonus.

Timing, not aiming

  • Watch the trail, not the ball. The flame behind it tells you how fast it is moving, which is the information you actually need for the next tap.
  • The first tap matters most. It sets where the other two land, and a late first tap cannot be rescued.
  • Tap as it lands, not at the top of the arc. Each hop adds a full arc of height, so tapping at the peak sends the ball straight off the top of the screen. The rhythm is a bounce, not a climb.
  • Let the hoop come to you. Once it is moving, the shot is far easier at the bottom of its travel than the top. Waiting a beat costs nothing.
  • Do not aim for the backboard. It will bank the ball in, and it will cost you the swish bonus every time.

Twelve kinds of shot

Difficulty here is not one number climbing. Each shot is drawn from a set of setups that unlock as your score rises, and the later ones combine.

  • Drifting hoop moves up and down while you shoot.
  • Low hoop is generous to hit but makes a clean swish harder.
  • Narrow rim halves the target, and tiny rim halves it again for double points.
  • High hoop forces the tallest arcs you can make.
  • Over the bar puts an obstacle mid-court that ends the shot if you clip it.
  • Tailwind is a gift. It is the easiest shot in the game, and it exists so a streak is something you can actually build.
  • Headwind is where runs die. The ball stalls short and you have to tap earlier than feels right.
  • Then the combinations: drifting and narrow, headwind and high, headwind and narrow.

Every variation has been simulated across thousands of tap patterns before shipping, so none of them is a shot you cannot make. One combination did not survive that: a headwind against a high hoop stalled the ball short of the rim every single time, and it was retuned rather than shipped.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Basketball Tap Shots?

Tap anywhere on the court, or press space. Each tap hops the ball up and to the right, and you get three hops per shot. Time them so the last one drops through the hoop. You are choosing when to tap, not how hard to throw.

How does scoring work?

A basket is one point. Going through without touching the rim or backboard is a swish and doubles it. Three baskets in a row doubles it again, so a clean shot on a streak is worth four.

Any tips?

Tap as the ball lands rather than at the top of its arc. Each hop adds a full arc of height, so tapping at the peak sends it straight off the top of the screen. The rhythm is a bounce along the floor, and the window on each tap is about six tenths of a second.

Should I use the backboard?

Only if you have to. It will bank the ball in, but it costs you the swish bonus every time, and the bonus is where the scores actually come from.

How does it get harder?

Not by one number climbing. Each shot is drawn from twelve setups that unlock as your score rises: a drifting hoop, a low or high one, a narrow or tiny rim, an obstacle to clear, a tailwind that helps and a headwind that does not. The later ones combine. All twelve were simulated across thousands of tap patterns before shipping, so none is a shot you cannot make.

Can I play with a keyboard?

Yes, space bar hops the ball. The game is designed for one thumb on a phone but works the same either way.

Is my score saved?

Your best score is kept in your own browser. No account, and nothing sent to a server.

Is the timing tight?

Not especially. Each hop takes about two thirds of a second to reach its peak, and there is a wide window on every tap. An early build had much faster arcs and only about one pattern in ten scored, which was miserable. Roughly half of sensible tap patterns go in now.

What is the tailwind for?

It is the easiest shot in the game, deliberately. Streak bonuses only mean something if a streak is achievable, so the rotation includes a shot that gives you one back. The headwind is the opposite and is where most runs end.
