About Save the Fish

Save the Fish is a free online pull-the-pin puzzle game set in a hand-drawn underground world. The ground is solid dirt, riddled with winding tunnels, and somewhere near the top a small fish sits in its own blob of water, held back by a golden pin. Down at the bottom, past the roots and rocks and the occasional worm, the blue ocean is waiting. Your job is one gesture repeated wisely: drag the right pin, in the right order, and let gravity carry water and fish together through the tunnel network all the way home.

The water is a live particle simulation, not an animation. Hundreds of droplets pour through the carved passages, pool in dips, back up behind plugged gates, and spill over humps when the level rises far enough. The fish genuinely rides this water: it floats on the surface, gets carried by the current, and goes wherever the flow goes. That makes every level a small hydraulics problem. Some passages only open when you release extra volume from a reserve chamber. Some pins guard lava that will race your fish to the ocean and poison it. Some routes pass glowing coals that drink your water dry, or a spinning saw parked exactly where the lazy path leads.

Sparkling keys are tucked along the tunnels, and they are the difference between finishing a level and mastering it: you earn one star for the rescue and one more for every key your fish or your water touches on the way down. Across 30 handcrafted levels the mechanics stack and recombine, and then the Second Shift mirrors and remixes everything you learned, flipping layouts to break your muscle memory and hiding new tricks in familiar shapes. Every single level has been machine-verified solvable, and every trap has been machine-verified fatal.

How to play Save the Fish

Drag any golden pin along its length to slide it out of the tunnel wall; release too early and it snaps back into place, so commit to the pull. Once a pin is gone, whatever it was holding obeys gravity immediately. Study the layout before touching anything: where does each tunnel lead, what is resting in that side chamber, and which pin is a trap that should never be pulled at all? Blue is water and it is your friend. Orange is lava, instantly fatal to fish and poisonous to the ocean itself. Glowing coals evaporate water until doused. The saw does what saws do. When your fish splashes down into the ocean, the level is won, and the R key or Restart button resets instantly. Progress, stars, and unlocked levels are saved in your browser, so the rescue continues where you left off. A gentle generative soundtrack and live water sound effects, from the rush of the pour to the final splash, play along with the physics; both can be toggled off and your preference is remembered.

Why pull-the-pin puzzles are so satisfying

Pin-pull games compress cause and effect into one clean gesture. You study a machine, form a theory, and commit with a single pull; two seconds later, physics delivers the verdict. When your theory is right, watching the water sweep your fish down exactly the route you predicted is genuinely delightful, the same pleasure as a domino run or a perfect billiards break. When it is wrong, the failure is fast, funny, and obviously your own fault, which makes tapping Restart feel like curiosity rather than punishment. Give the puzzle a character with stakes, one small fish whose whole future depends on your reasoning, and every wrong pull becomes personal.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Save the Fish?

Drag a golden pin along its length to pull it out of the tunnel wall; release early and it snaps back. Once a pin is gone, gravity takes over: the water flows through the carved tunnels and the fish rides the current. Get the fish to the ocean at the bottom and the level is won.

What do the hazards do?

Lava is instantly fatal to the fish, and if enough of it pours into the ocean the rescue fails too, so some pins should never be pulled. Glowing coals evaporate water that touches them until doused. Spinning saws are fatal on contact. A fish left high and dry with no pins remaining is stranded.

How do the stars and keys work?

You earn one star for saving the fish and one more for each sparkling key your fish or your water touches on the way down, up to three stars per level. Stars, keys, and unlocked levels are saved in your browser between visits.

How many levels are there?

Thirty handcrafted levels. The first twelve introduce the mechanics one at a time: routing, pin sequences, lava traps, volume humps, coals, saw forks, and a finale. The Second Shift then mirrors and remixes everything. Every level is machine-verified solvable and every trap machine-verified fatal.
