About Color Match

Color Match is a free online colour mixing game that turns you into a paint chemist. Every level shows you an object painted in a specific target colour: a balloon, a mug, a rubber duck, a cactus. Your job is to recreate that exact shade by mixing parts of red, yellow, blue, white, and black paint, then apply your blend to the object and see the two side by side.

The mixing works the way real paint works, not the way computers usually cheat. Yellow and blue make green. Red and yellow make orange. Red and blue make violet. Add white to lift a colour toward a pastel, add black to push it into deeper, moodier territory. Under the hood the game blends your paints in RYB colour space, the traditional artist's colour wheel, so every mix behaves like pigment on a palette rather than light on a screen.

A live match meter tells you how close your blend is to the target. Anything under 55 percent means your mix needs a rethink. Get past 75 and you are one careful adjustment away. Reach 90 percent and the Apply button unlocks, letting you paint the object and compare your result against the original. Nail it with a minimal number of paint parts and you earn three stars; take the scenic route through a muddy palette and you still pass, just with less glory.

Levels are the same for everyone, so when a friend says they three-starred level 14, they faced exactly the mix you did. Early levels use simple two-colour blends. Later ones bring in white and black for tints and shades, then sneak a third colour into the recipe, which is where things get genuinely tricky: is that murky teal more blue than yellow, and did they darken it with black or just more blue?

How to play Color Match

Look at the target object and study its colour. Tap the paint blobs to add one part at a time to your mix: each tap of red, yellow, blue, white, or black shifts your blend, and the object on the right updates instantly along with the match percentage. Use Undo to remove your last part, Clear to start the mix over, or the Hint button when you are stuck: it analyses your current blend and tells you the single best move, whether that is adding a paint or removing one you overdid. Each hint counts as an extra part toward your star rating, so lean on it wisely. Once the meter reads 90 percent or higher, hit Apply colour to lock it in, collect your stars, and move to the next level. On desktop you can play entirely from the keyboard: keys 1 to 5 add paints, Z undoes, H asks for a hint, and Enter applies. Your level progress and total stars are saved in your browser, so you can come back and continue where you left off.

Why colour mixing is so satisfying

Colour matching sits in a sweet spot between logic and intuition. Your eye can tell instantly that a shade is wrong, but working out why is a genuine puzzle: too warm means less red or more blue, too pale means you overdid the white, too muddy usually means one part too many of everything. Artists spend years building this instinct, and games like this compress that feedback loop into seconds. It is also quietly educational: after a dozen levels you start reading real-world colours differently, spotting the drop of yellow hiding in a wall paint or the touch of black in a bottle green. That, and there is something deeply calming about nudging a colour into place one part at a time.
