Every round adds another square. It is a test of working memory under a very specific condition: you get one brief look and no chance to rehearse.
The name comes from research at the Primate Research Institute at Kyoto University, where young chimpanzees were tested on almost exactly this task and performed better than human adults, holding accurate spatial layouts from exposures of a fraction of a second. The usual explanation is that humans trade some of that immediate photographic capacity for language, though it remains an area of genuine debate rather than settled fact.
Most people fail somewhere between 8 and 10 squares. Getting to 11 puts you in the top quarter, 13 in the top fifteen percent, and beyond 15 is rare. The chimpanzees in the Kyoto studies handled around nine reliably at exposures far shorter than the ones here, which is the comparison that makes the test uncomfortable.
The Chimp Test is the hardest of the three memory tests here because there is no rehearsal window. Sequence Memory shows you the order over time, and Number Memory lets you say the digits to yourself. Comparing all three tells you whether your memory leans spatial or verbal. Reaction Time and Aim Trainer round out the set with speed rather than recall.
